A dad's guide to Mother's Day gifts

Simple gifts that kids can make for Mom

Dad--send mom off on a shopping spree, then gather your kids together for the afternoon and whip up one of these great Mother's Day gifts.  (While you're at it, why not make gifts for the grandmas, too?)

Oven mitts with an artistic flair

Have the kids turn those plain oven mitts into whimsical works of art with permanent markers.  Purchase several new oven mitts in solid colors--light colors work best.  An orange beak and webbed feet transform a yellow mitt into a silly looking duck; brown stripes and whiskers turn an white mitt into a kitten.  Or kids can draw any other design their heart desires.

For complete directions on this project, check out the Family.com website.  Their nifty CraftFinder tool will help you locate project instructions.

I.O.U. Checks

Although this is a quick and easy gift to make, it will definitely be appreciated by mom!  These "checks" are to be cashed by mom when she needs or wants help with some tasks around the house.  Have your children decide what tasks they can handle.  Examples could include:

"one time of taking out the garbage without asking"

"one time of cleaning my bedroom without an argument"

"one hour of quiet time"

"one dog wash"

"one free dinner made by us."

Then design the checks on your computer and print them out.  Have the kids color them and fill in the appropriate information.  Staple the checks together. If you have an unused check cover around the house, you could place the checks inside there and present them to mom.  If not, use colored construction paper to make a cover for the checks.

To assist you, we've designed some checks and uploaded them to the website.  You can print them out and use them if you don't feel comfortable designing your own.  To see the templates, click here:

One-of-a-kind footstool

After a hard day of chasing the kids around, mom probably wishes she could just sit back and put up her feet!  Give her an excuse to do so with her own customized footstool.

Buy a plain wood footstool; prime it then paint it a solid color a few days in advance. Then have the kids sign it and draw designs on it using paint pens or regular paint and stencils. You might even consider decoupaging a photo of the family on the stool. Seal it with a finishing varnish after the paint has dried.  Tie a big red bow around it and present it to mom on her special day--along with an invitation to sit back and put up her feet, of course!

Handmade soap

Homemade soap is a quick and simple craft project that kids can easily make, especially if you use soap powder.  Color it in mom's favorite shades with food coloring; the soap can also be molded into balls, rectangles, hearts or other shapes.  Or you can use  molds to form it into fancier shapes like roses, angels, stars and even Asian symbols!

You can purchase molds like the one pictured above from joann.com

A bouquet of  cookie flowers

This cute project can easily be made with

a roll of refrigerated cookie dough.  Or, if you aren't handy in the kitchen, check with your local bakery:  they may be willing to make the undecorated cookies for you. (Ask them to put a wooden skewer in each cookie while it is still warm.)  The kids can help decorate the cookies with sprinkles, decorator icing, etc.
