Our favorite educational toys

(and a brief overview of our favorite educational toy stores)

Discovery Digital Sound Lab

Your child will be amazed at what he can do with this digital sound and electricity lab.  He can twist, distort and project sound – making his  voice sound like a robot or make his  alarm crow like a rooster!  This kit includes everything he needs for 20 different sound experiments and 30 circuitry projects. A great way to learn about circuitry and how it affects sound and voice modulation.  It is safe; no tools or soldering required and there are step-by-step instructions to make even advanced concepts easy.  There are small parts, so keep it away from children under 3.  Recommended for boys and girls ages 8 and older.  It's available from DiscoveryChannelStore.com for $29.95 (Item #795310)

What we like about The Discovery Store:

We're big fans of the programming on The Discovery Channel so we like to occasionally surf to the Discovery Channel store and see what new videos and science products are available. You can find DVD gift sets for some of their most popular programming, including Meerkat Manor, Shark Week and Mythbusters.  Some of the store's other cool finds include a retro looking satellite lamp that blinks (Item #794735, $39.95); the award winning remote control Roboquad robot (Item #785857, $89.95); and the Nature's Fire Color Changing Volcano (Item #748020, $24.99).  There are always some fascinating finds at The Discovery Store!

The perfect gift for the little girl who dreams of being a ballerina!  This item, which is the winner of the

Creative Child Magazine Award, is a beautiful dress-up dress which plays the classical music of Tchaikovsky when your little girl dances. Recommended for ages 2 and up.  $32.99 from Kazoo Toys (Item #ACT-178945ds) They also sell dresses that play the Hokey Pokey, Swan Lake, the Macarena and more.

What we like about Kazoo Toys:

We love the fact that this store gives you access to the best toys from abroad, like  the beechwood blocks from the German company Haba and the origami kits from Japan.  A number of their toys are also made in the U.S., including an innovative building toy called Zometool (which uses color and shape-coded parts integrate numbers, shapes, and vectors into one fascinating product that helps players build everything from a simple house to a shadow or "squashed" icosahedron.  What a sneaky way to teach everything from numbers to advanced scientific principles!

What like about store:

Geography toys!  My son loves all-things geography, but it can be hard to find geography toys, games and books that are truly interesting and fun for children.  This store carries several different items, including geography board games, talking globes, and of course, National Geographic books and DVDs.
