Symbolic plants and flowers for Mother's Day

by Cheryl Schroeder

I recently finished reading a very interesting book called The Language of Gifts: The Essential Guide to Meaningful Gift Giving by Deanna Washington.  This 232-page book shows the reader how to turn ordinary gifts into symbolic gestures that will be cherished by the recipient.

Throughout the book, Washington explains ancient and modern meanings behind astrological signs, common objects, flowers, plants, trees, food, animals, jewelry, colors, numbers, shapes, body parts, scents and even days of the week.  She then shows the reader how to apply that symbology when selecting presents for gift giving occasions like Christmas or birthdays.

I thought Washington's book would be especially appropriate for Mother's Day, when most of us yearn to give something sentimental but are hindered by time and money constraints.   Since flowers (and especially roses) are one of the most popular gifts, this article focuses on alternative plants and flowers. So take the plunge and break out of the rose-rut this year!

Washington's book lists a number of plants and flowers that would make a suitable substitute for roses, including:

Plants or flowers that are especially appropriate for Mother's Day  Meaning and uses*
Azalea The ancient Chinese emblem of womanhood.
African Violet Invokes peacefulness and reclaims spirit
Carnations According to Christian legend, carnations sprang from Mary's tears while she was walking to Calvary. It is the official flower of Mother's Day.
Orange Tree In aromatherapy, the orange is reputed  to re-energize a tired person
Cypress a sacred tree in many cultures because it symbolizes a long life, purity and spiritual virtues
Lavender invokes a feeling of freshness; calms frazzled nerves and promotes happiness
Lilac brings good luck to its recipient (especially if you find flowerettes with five instead of four lobes), symbolizes love
Rosemary Used traditionally and in aromatherapy to combat fatigue and promote mental stimulation
Strawberry plant In Victorian times, the berry represented perfection, sweetness in life and character.
Tulip in Persia, it is a symbol for living life fully; also symbolizes perfect love, (Iike the love between mother and child)
